Στην Κομισιόν το θέμα της απέλασης του δημοσιογράφου Νίκου Ασλανίδη από την Τουρκία

Την παρέμβαση της ηγεσίας και των θεσμών της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης ζητά ο Αντιπρόεδρος της Ευρωομάδας της Αριστεράς (The Left) και Ευρωβουλευτής του ΣΥΡΙΖΑ–ΠΣ, Κώστας Αρβανίτης, μετά το εξαιρετικά ανησυχητικό περιστατικό αυθαίρετης κράτησης, απαγόρευσης εισόδου και απόπειρας μεταγωγής στο εσωτερικό της Τουρκίας του Έλληνα δημοσιογράφου, Νίκου Ασλανίδη.

Ο Κώστας Αρβανίτης απέστειλε σχετική επιστολή προς την Πρόεδρο της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής Ούρσουλα φον ντερ Λάιεν, την Ύπατη Εκπρόσωπο της ΕΕ για θέματα Εξωτερικής Πολιτικής Κάγια Κάλας, τα μέλη της Επιτροπής Πολιτικών Ελευθεριών, Δικαιοσύνης και Εσωτερικών Υποθέσεων (LIBE), καθώς και της Μικτής Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής ΕΕ–Τουρκίας, καταγγέλλοντας τη συμπεριφορά των τουρκικών αρχών ως σαφή ένδειξη κλιμάκωσης του αυταρχισμού και κρατικής αυθαιρεσίας στη γειτονική χώρα.

Στην επιστολή του ο Ευρωβουλευτής επισημαίνει: «Ο δημοσιογράφος Νίκος Ασλανίδης, μέλος της ΕΣΗΕΜ-Θ, κρατήθηκε παράνομα στα ελληνοτουρκικά σύνορα, χαρακτηρίστηκε ανεπιθύμητος και επιβιβάστηκε βίαια σε τουρκικό περιπολικό με προορισμό το εσωτερικό της Τουρκίας. Μόνο χάρη στην έγκαιρη παρέμβαση του Έλληνα πρόξενου της Αδριανούπολης αποφεύχθηκαν τα χειρότερα. Είναι προφανές ότι ο κύριος Ασλανίδης γλίτωσε από μια κρατική απαγωγή κυριολεκτικά την τελευταία στιγμή.» Ο Κώστας Αρβανίτης τονίζει ότι το περιστατικό συνιστά ευθεία προσβολή των ευρωπαϊκών αξιών, των θεμελιωδών δικαιωμάτων και της ελευθερίας του Τύπου, ενώ προειδοποιεί ότι «σύντομα κάποιος άλλος “ανεπιθύμητος” Ευρωπαίος πολίτης μπορεί να μην είναι τόσο τυχερός».

Για τους λόγους αυτούς, καλεί: την Πρόεδρο της Επιτροπής και την Ύπατη Εκπρόσωπο να καταδικάσουν δημόσια το περιστατικό, να ζητήσουν εξηγήσεις από την Τουρκία και να απευθύνουν αυστηρές συστάσεις μέσω των διπλωματικών και πολιτικών οδών, τα μέλη της Επιτροπής LIBE να εντάξουν το περιστατικό στις εργασίες τους και να διαμαρτυρηθούν θεσμικά για την απαράδεκτη μεταχείριση Ευρωπαίων πολιτών από το καθεστώς Ερντογάν, και τα μέλη της Μικτής Επιτροπής ΕΕ–Τουρκίας να προβούν σε έντονη διαμαρτυρία στις επαφές τους με Τούρκους αξιωματούχους.

«Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση οφείλει να σταθεί στο ύψος των αρχών της και να μην ανεχθεί τέτοιου είδους προκλήσεις. Η ελευθερία του Τύπου και η ασφάλεια των Ευρωπαίων πολιτών δεν είναι διαπραγματεύσιμες», καταλήγει ο αντιπρόεδρος της Αριστεράς (LEFT). Ακολουθεί το κείμενο της επιστολής του Κώστα Αρβανίτη: Honourable European Commission President von der Leyen, I seize this opportunity to inform you of an extremely disturbing incident that occurred on the Greek-Turkish border, involving a prominent Greek journalist. This event is absolutely indicative of the escalation of authoritarianism and state arbitrariness in Türkiye, which I invite you to consider seriously and to take all appropriate action. Specifically, on the morning of Friday, October 17, journalist Nikolaos Aslanidis was traveling to Istanbul as part of a delegation of approximately 110 journalists from the Journalists’ Union of Macedonia and Thrace, on a trip to meet with the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. When the mission arrived at the Greek-Turkish border, following an identity check on Mr. Aslanidis, the Turkish authorities removed him to a purpose-built detention chamber where he was held illegally and abusively, and announced that he was not allowed to enter the country because he constitutes ‘a security threat for Türkiye.’ Furthermore, they served him with a document declaring him persona non grata without any justification whatsoever, and referred him to the Turkish consulate of Thessaloniki for any further inquiries. However, instead of accompanying him to the Greek-Turkish border after the procedure was concluded, they boarded him onto a Turkish police vehicle bound to an unknown destination within Turkey, presumably to a detention and interrogation facility. Luckily for Mr. Aslanidis, the worst-case scenario was averted thanks to a well-timed phone call from the Greek consul in Adrianople, who protested strongly to the Turkish authorities and managed to dissuade them from their intentions. The victim’s own account is a shocking testimony: ‘They kept me in a room and wouldn’t let me leave. When I told them that I wanted to return to the Greek border, they replied, ‘No, you will have to wait until we decide what to do with you.’ At some point, they placed me in a Turkish police car and, instead of taking me to the border, they drove towards the Turkish hinterland. Fortunately for me, at that exact moment, the consul from Adrianople called, spoke to them in Turkish, and then they U-turned and escorted me back to the Greek-Turkish border where I was finally released.’ It is beyond doubt that Mr. Aslanidis narrowly dodged a state abduction at the eleventh hour. It is beyond doubt that Türkiye is constantly demonstrating its persistent departure from European values, despite the assurances to the contrary recently offered by Mr. Erdogan to Ms. von der Leyen. It is beyond doubt that, in the near future, some other ‘unwelcome’ European citizen will not be as “fortunate” as Mr. Aslanidis. Such provocations against Europeans cannot remain unaddressed by the Union’s leadership and institutions. On these grounds, I urge you to publicly condemn the aforementioned incident, to address stern recommendations to Turkey through all available diplomatic and political channels, and to officially request explanations.
